Monitoring the post-release success of howler monkey troops
Date
Since January 2025
Location
Costa Rica
I coordinate the post-release monitoring of howler monkey troops, which is carried out together with assistants and volunteers. Our work focuses on tracking the geographic movement of individuals, as well as evaluating health and behavioral indicators for each of them. We have developed methodologies that allow us to monitor the monkeys in the forest environment without the use of radio telemetry equipment. These strategies have included marking systems, the establishment of a site preparation procedure, and systematic monitoring protocols to collect data on their location, mobility, and activity.
The meticulous analysis of the information gathered in the field enables us to evaluate not only the success of the release itself but also of prior processes such as the monkeys’ rehabilitation. Furthermore, it helps us refine reintroduction strategies and optimize the integration of individuals into their natural habitat in future troop releases.
