Management of the ICU at a wildlife rescue center in Costa Rica
Date
Since January 2025
Location
Costa Rica
Managing the Intensive Care Unit at a wildlife rescue center involves a unique role in the rearing of orphaned individuals from various wild species native to Costa Rica. These include numerous bird species, small mammals such as squirrels, opossums, and raccoons, as well as larger species like howler monkeys.
The process begins with the design of individualized protocols that address the physical, nutritional, and behavioral needs of each animal. This demands constant monitoring, a deep understanding of each species’ development, and the application of a wide range of rearing techniques, given the vast diversity of species handled at a wildlife rescue center.
The practice focuses on gradually recreating the natural conditions of each species’ environment, allowing young animals to strengthen their instincts and innate skills. The rearing and rehabilitation process requires both precision and sensitivity to adapt care and strategies at each stage, ensuring a full recovery and eventual reintegration into their natural habitat.
