Monitoring and evaluation of the success of scarlet macaw reintroduction
Location
Costa Rica
Date
Since January 2025
I coordinate the systematic monitoring of released scarlet macaws by a team of assistants and volunteers, implementing monitoring protocols that assess their real-time adaptation to the natural environment. This process includes field data collection on the health, behavior, diet, and mobility of the released individuals, which translates into key indicators of success. Both soft-release events and dispersal patterns in the surrounding area are documented, providing crucial information to adjust reintroduction strategies.
The analysis of these data is conducted through periodic reviews that allow us to estimate survival rates, individual integration into their new habitat, and, in the future, their ability to reproduce independently. This continuous evaluation is essential to determine the impact of the reintroduction and to lay the groundwork for ensuring the long-term viability and recovery of the scarlet macaw population in the region.
