Diet protocol for a mixed enclosure of mammals and reptiles.
Date
February 2023
I have designed and established a diet protocol for a mixed zoo enclosure housing common muntjacs (Muntiacus muntjak), Parma wallabies (Macropus parma), and sulcata tortoises (Centrochelys sulcata).
The diet has been planned based on the foraging strategies of these three species in the wild, all of which are partially browsing-grazing, to varying degrees. Additionally, data from the care and maintenance of these species in captivity were taken into account to optimize the diets for the animals’ living conditions under human care.
The project considered not only the foods to be offered but also how each food should be presented, the frequency of offering them, and the approximate quantities. This approach aims to prevent non-target animals from consuming certain foods, as well as promote optimal feeding, both from a nutritional standpoint and a behavioral perspective.
