Diet design for howler monkeys for release
Date
October 2024
Location
Costa Rica
I have designed a new diet for howler monkeys in rehabilitation at a rescue center, to be released back into the wild.
The goal is for the diet to meet the species' nutritional requirements, resemble their wild diet (primarily based on leaves from wild species, as well as some fruits and flowers), to ensure their mental and behavioral rehabilitation, and to be feasible both economically and logistically (considering that the center is located in a remote area far from major urban centers).
To achieve this, I have analyzed the nutritional composition of the previous diet, as well as its suitability in terms of similarity to the species' natural diet. Additionally, I have studied the growth curve of the individuals currently housed at the center to assess whether their growth with the previous diet was optimal. Based on all this, as well as the availability of ingredients, their nutritional composition, and additional characteristics, I have developed a protocol for a diet that much better suits the needs of the animals we care for and are rehabilitating, while also considering our capabilities as a wildlife rescue center.
